About SubStation Alpha Format
SubStation Alpha (or Sub Station Alpha) is a timed text subtitling format that supports text styling, text formatting, text positioning, fonts, pictures, animation, and graphic karaoke effects.
SubStation Alpha (SSA), or the more recent Advanced SubStation Subtitles (ASS) are basically different versions of the same format:
SubStation Alpha may have the file extension .ssa (hence it's abbreviated SSA) and refers to versions <=4 of the format.
Advanced SubStation Subtitles (or Advanced SSA) may have .ass file extension and refers to versions 4+ of the format.

Both ASS and SSA are plain text files and can be opened or edited by any text editor.
About Converting .ass to .srt
ASS is a more feature reach format than SRT. While converting SubStation to Subrip works well, some effects or styling may be lost during conversion.
Is ASS Better Than SRT?
Both ASS and SRT are Timed Text subtitling formats.
ASS is a more advanced subtitling format than SRT - while SRT allows some text styling (such as bold and italic), ASS allows you to do some advanced display features such as text positioning, custom fonts, karaoke-like graphic, and more.
ASS is less popular in the professional community while SRT is more common in usage.
